Our client is looking for Scientific Officers to join their team!

Rate of Pay: £15.97

Location: Lisburn BT28

Hours: 37 Hours

Work Pattern: 9 to 5 Monday to Friday

Duration: 6 months with possible extension

Start Date: 02 September 2024

 

Job Description:


Scientific officers will be required to assist in identifying water quality pressures within the Lough Neagh catchment area. This may include site inspections at industrial / agricultural premises, biological and chemical sampling along with analysis and reporting.


RESPONSIBLE/ACCOUNTABLE TO:

Scientific Officers will report to a Higher Scientific Officer


MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Scientific Officers will undertake fieldwork / investigations at several predetermined sites throughout the Neagh Catchment which accounts for 43% of Northern Ireland. Scientific officers will collect biological and chemical samples along with rapid assessment techniques accessing indicators of pollution. All sampling will be via an approved methodology and training will be provided.


Scientific officers will be required to present their finding to team members, other teams within NIEA, and more widely.


They will assist other staff with proactive site visits to industrial sites, agricultural, wastewater sites and other premises identified as part of the NIEA pollution prevention campaign.

Support duties to assist NIEA and Council water quality field staff.


Assist in data processing and analysis to identify localized pressures and appropriate actions

Assist in providing advice to and administering DAERA funded community projects to improve the water environmentRegular checks and audit of NIEA vehicles.


Driving NIEA vehicles from a vehicle pool to collect samples from pre-agreed sites.

 

Staff will be expected to be able to drive as they will have access to a vehicle supplied for their field duties.


Experience required is as per the Protocol:

 GCE/GCSE O levels grades A-C in English Language, Mathematics and Double Award Science or 2 science subjects to include chemistry, biology, physics, geography.Hold a full Category B driving licence valid for NI


Desired Criteria:

A-level Earth Science subjects would be an advantage.

A relevant science degree would be an advantage.

A knowledge of GIS, Excel and database use would be an advantage.

Experience in undertaking site inspections / audits would be an advantage.

Experience in working in a regulatory environment would be an advantage
